Everyday Mandala for Children™ is a series of activity books designed to help develop your child's photographic memory and visualization abilities. Watch videos on how to play this game with young children!
When an image like the one shown above is flashed to us for 2 seconds, most of us try to remember the parts of the image, in sequence or by attempting to spot a pattern. However, as the image gets more complex, it is simply impossible to remember accurately within such a short time. However, when a child gets accustomed to capturing images within seconds, he learns to remember things instantly and develops what is commonly known as photographic memory.
Try staring at a solid-coloured object against contrasting background (e.g. black/red box against white wall) for 5-10 seconds. Then, close your eyes or direct your vision onto a plain wall. Does the image seem to 'appear' on the plain wall? Some people are able to visualize the image. To many, they "reappear" in contrasting colours e.g. black turns out as white and blue as yellow or orange, while some need to stare longer at the image or repeat the same steps several times before they could visualize. Through regular practice, it is possible to achieve perfect memory of images captured.
The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit, loosely translated to mean "circle". In its visual form, Mandalas are often kaleidescopic and symmetrical with a centre radiating inward or outward, creating a kind of wholeness. Similar patterns can be found in nature including flowers, the spiral on snails/shells, the rings on tree trunks, and the Milky Way.
Professor Makoto Shichida, a well known public figure in the field of right-brain education, uses mandalas in training photographic and visualization abilities. With young children, this activity requires your child to capture the image of the Mandala within seconds and apply the colours onto an uncoloured Mandala. The alternative method requires your child to stare at the Mandala for a few more seconds, focusing on the centre of the Mandala, then asking him to close his eyes and visualize the Mandala in his mind. According to Professor Shichida, when a child has seen all the shapes and patterns there is, the child develops the ability to remember images easily, and this has tremendous impact on his learning abilities. Together with eye training exercises, regular practice of these Mandala activities also sets the foundation for further development in speed reading.
The development of Everyday Mandala for Children™ series of activity books is inspired by the beliefs, discoveries and methods of teaching conducted by Professor Makoto Shichida and The Shichida Method.
In Everyday Mandala for Children™, the Mandalas are uniquely designed so they are not too complex or too easy for children, suitable for children as young as 2 years old. Yet, the level of difficulty increases as your child moves on so that children will continue to find them challenging yet fun and stimulating!
As results depend very much on parental commitment and regular practice, Everyday Mandala for Children™ emphasizes captivating and non-repetitive designs so parents and children can have something to look forward to everyday. If practiced everyday, Everday Mandala for Children™ provides parents with a ready source of non-repetitive training materials with little preparation required!

Prepare 3 (or 4) coloured pencils – Blue, Yellow and Red (and Green).
Begin by sitting your child onto a comfortable position with a table in front of him. When he is ready, flash the Mandala about an arm's length away from him for up to 2 seconds. Ensure that you are holding the Mandala upright by checking on the printed words in the corner. Allow your child to close his eyes for about 2 seconds to visualize the image before placing the uncoloured Mandala onto the table in front of him and asking him to apply a stroke of color in each area corresponding to the image he captured. When your child has completed all the areas, show him the Mandala to verify the colours. You may allow your child to complete the colouring if he likes to.
Always be positive and end the session on a happy note. Remember to praise your child if he gets it right, and give credit for efforts (e.g. good try!) if your child gets it wrong.
Advice: Conduct this exercise once a day on a daily basis.

When you child has completed the colouring activities, you may wish to hold the Mandala up against a plain wall, and ask your child to stare at the Mandala for about 5 seconds focusing on the centre of the Mandala. Then, ask him to close his eyes and visualize the image of the Mandala in his mind. If your child can visualize the image with his eyes closed, ask him to hold the image there for as long as he can.
This practice may be more suitable for older children (7 years and above). In fact, you can also join in the practice!
